Catch A Show At MetroStage Theatre Near Abingdon Row

MetroStage also called the “Broadway on the River’s Edge”, is a professional non-profit theatre company that produces contemporary plays and musicals.

Founded in 1984 as American Showcase Theatre Company, Inc., MetroStage is the oldest professional theatre in Northern Virginia. The 130 seat theatre presents an eclectic range of drama, comedy, and music in an intimate, communal setting. No seat is a bad seat at MetroStage, you are able to see the stage from wherever you are seated. Some of the shows you’ll see here include ‘serious, thought-provoking’ plays, one-actor presentations, musicals with live bands placed just off stage, and intimate ‘cabaret-style’ shows. My favorite is the hilarious annual holiday presentation of  “A Broadway Christmas Carol” with just 3 actors (+ piano player) play all the roles in the Dickens story, changing costumes before your eyes while dancing and singing 30+ Broadway show tunes.

MetroStage is located at 1201 North Royal Street in Old Town Alexandria, just around the block from Abingdon Row. There is both on-site and street parking plus a number of great shops and restaurants nearby for both ‘before and after’ the show. While finding the theater might be a bit tricky the first time you go, just go to metrostage.org for directions and a map.
